The American Red Cross.

Adult CPR - Infant & Child & AED - First Aid

Course combines lectures, demonstrations and video with hands on training and practice.  Participants learn to recognize and respond to emergencies including shock, cardiac and breathing emergencies for adults, children and infants, heat and cold emergencies, sudden illness and poisonings.  In addition, participants will learn First Aid for everything from cuts and scrapes to muscle, bone and joint injuries.

Babysitter Training

This course has a unique interactive, education format that tasks youth, ages 11-14 years of age, with activities such as identifying safety problems around the house and yard and selecting age-appropriate toys and games for children in their care.  Participants learn by doing.  Course is offered annually by several county extension services in the Iowa Great Lakes Area.

Lifeguard Training

Designed for swimmers 15 years of age and older.  Content includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and Lifeguard training which includes lessons in professionalism, surveillance, victim recognition, equipment-based rescues and caring for head, neck and back injuries.  This course is offered frequently at area water facilities such as Smith Wellness Center in Emmetsburg, Bedell Family YMCA in Spirit Lake, Regional Wellness Center in Estherville  and the Spencer Family YMCA.

Water Safety Instructor

Designed for swimmers 16 years of age or older.  Course provides candidates with with the training needed to plan and conduct courses within the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program.  Covers teaching progressions, course and lesson planning, recognizing common skill errors, providing corrective feedback, motor learning and hydrodynamic principles.

Learn to Swim

Designed for children and adults.  This course will include a broad range of swimming levels for all ages.  Six levels to complete to achieve full competency and safety in the water.  Beginners start at level 1 and advance through level 6.  This continues to be a FREE course in Spencer at the Aquatic Center thanks to the cooperation of the City of Spencer, the Spencer Family YMCA and the Spencer Parks and Recreation Department.

A very special thanks to all the "Learn to Swim" participants who went door to door to raise money for the chapter.
We are excited to announce $12,500 was raised during these summer months of 2008.
