The Iowa Great Lakes Chapter of the American Red Cross got its original charter in 1917 as the Spencer Red Cross Chapter, ultimately coming under the title of the
Clay County Red Cross Chapter.

In 1964, the Clay County Chapter through a merger process became the Iowa Great Lakes Chapter which included Clay, Dickinson and Emmet Counties.

As the American Red Cross moves forward with ARC-One restructuring in 2007-2008, the Iowa Great Lakes Chapter will officially add Palo Alto and Kossuth counties into its jurisdiction.

The Iowa Great Lakes Chapter is an American Red Cross “Community Chapter”
which falls under the umbrella of the “Regional Chapter”, the Siouxland Area Chapter based in Sioux City.
